Human Services writes public and private sector advocating for employment for PWDs with equal pay

Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr Vindhya Persaud

Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Dr Vindhya Persaud, on Thursday evening, said she had written the public and private sectors regarding employment for persons with disabilities.

Minister Persaud noted it is important for these persons to be treated equally; hence she has taken the step to write these stakeholders.

The Guyana Council of Organisations for Persons with Disabilities (GCOPD) has been continuously calling on the relevant stakeholders to employ persons with disabilities and not discriminate against them. This move, Minister Persaud said, is a bold but necessary one.

"On the issue of employment, I would have written the private sector and even my own colleagues in the public sector to encourage employment of persons with disabilities and of course with equal pay for what they have done."

To further build the knowledge of PWDs, the Ministry aims to train 600 persons in various areas, including social media and graphic design.

Minister Persaud also said she has written to stakeholders to implement facilities so that persons with disabilities can access services easily. This includes facilities in place at both old and new businesses.

Minister Persaud continuously promotes the need to have an inclusive and accommodating environment for persons with disabilities. To this end, several other projects, including constructing a business centre for PWDs, are expected to be completed shortly.
