Girlfriend jokes between prisoners at Lusignan Prison end in murder

L-R: Anthony Prince and Shamar Davis

A convicted robber was on Saturday fatally stabbed with a piece of mop stick to the neck by another inmate at the Lusignan Prison while making jokes about each other’s girlfriends.

The Guyana Prison Service (GPS) identified the dead prisoner as Anthony Prince, 23, of Lot 56 ‘B’ Field, Sophia, Greater Georgetown. He was stabbed allegedly by repeat offender Shamar Davis, the GPS said.

Reports are that at about 14:05h, Prince and Davis were making jokes about each other’s girlfriends. The situation escalated when Davis, reportedly using a piece of mop stick, stabbed Prince in the neck.

Following the attack, Prince received immediate medical attention from the prison’s nurse and was subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital for further treatment.

Despite efforts to save him, Prince succumbed to his injuries around 14:45h while still undergoing medical care at the hospital.

The Police were informed, and they are currently investigating the matter. Prisoner Davis was placed in a separate cell.

The Officer-in-Charge and the Welfare Officer are currently engaging the other prisoners in discussions about the effects of making the wrong decision.

Director of Prisons Nicklon Elliot expressed condolences to Prince's family and pledged to provide support during this difficult time.

Davis was remanded to prison last year after being slapped with a robbery charge.
