Girl, 13, hospitalised after being struck by car in Sophia
A 13-year-old female student is hospitalised and recovering from injuries sustained in a vehicular accident on Saturday night in Sophia, Greater Georgetown.
The incident occurred around 20:00h on Dennis Street, near Section ‘C’ Field Access Road.
According to a statement from the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the accident involved a motor car with registration number PXX 8265, driven by 21-year-old Timothy King, a resident of ‘B’ Field South Sophia.
The girl was struck while attempting to cross the road. Preliminary investigations reveal that the car was travelling east along the northern drive lane of Dennis Street when the girl suddenly crossed from south to north.
Reports indicate she emerged from behind a parked vehicle on the southern drive lane, inadvertently stepping into the path of King’s car, leading to the collision.
As a result of the impact, the girl was thrown onto the car’s windshield before falling to the roadway, sustaining multiple injuries.
She was immediately assisted by the driver and several public-spirited citizens, who transported her to the Georgetown Public Hospital.
The girl was seen by the doctor on duty and is being treated for head injuries. Medical personnel have described her condition as stable.
The driver is in police custody and is assisting with the ongoing investigation.
