GAWU AND Guysuco ink agreement -Sugar workers to receive 8% salary increase



The Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) and the Guyana Sugar Corporation Inc (GuySuCo) earlier today inked an updated Collective Labour Agreement (CLA) for improved pay and working condition.


After several meetings between The Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU) and the Guyana Sugar Corporation Inc (GuySuCo) would have reached an agreement with the Corporation, that sugar workers on the payroll will have an eight percent wage/salary increase.


This increase will to take effect on January 01, 2022.


Sugar workers will receive their retroactive payments on Friday, December 16, 2022, when they receive their usual wages and salaries.


The agreement will also ensures that appropriate adjustments to pay scales and other piece rates are in keeping with the across-the-board improvement.


The Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union and GuySuCo have also agreed to improvements in some issues regarding personal protective equipment (PPE) which workers will benefit from going forward.



GuySuCo disclosed that the new rates of pay have been implemented and sugar workers have welcomed the improvements in conditions and pay levels.


They have also expressed their appreciation to the Government for their assistance and recognise the efforts of the Administration to ensure that they are treated similarly to their colleagues in other sections of the State.




Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union President, Seepaul Narine, said in his remarks that the Union and the workers took into account the present constraints confronting the industry and thanked the Government for their support in paving the way for the agreement to be reached.
