Fisherman arrested over murder of reputed wife

L-R: Neldon Neblett and Anuradha Khatoon

Police have apprehended Neldon Neblett, the man who allegedly murdered his reputed wife, Anuradha Khatoon, on Saturday at their home in Best Village, West Coast Demerara (WCD).

In a brief statement, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) said the arrest was made mere hours after the crime, and Neblett remains in custody and is expected to be hauled before the Court soon.

The murder took place at approximately 23:30h on Saturday at the couple’s residence, a single-storey concrete structure.

The 30-year-old fisherman reportedly returned home intoxicated, leading to an altercation with Khatoon, a 34-year-old fruit vendor also known as ‘Mama.’

According to initial investigations, Khatoon confronted Neblett about his drinking habits, urging him to cut back.

The confrontation quickly escalated, resulting in Neblett allegedly arming himself with a knife and stabbing Khatoon in the throat. The grievously injured woman collapsed in the living room, and Neblett fled the scene.

An alarm was raised by the woman’s 12-year-old son, who was awakened by his mother’s screams. Family members rushed the 34-year-old fruit vendor to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, but she was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police recovered a kitchen knife from the scene, and a stab wound was observed on Khatoon’s throat. Her body has been transported to Ezekiel Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.

Police had said that the couple had been in a common-law relationship for the past five years.
