Fight over “bush weed” leaves one dead

A fight between two men at Policeman Corner, La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara (WBD), over the type of marijuana one of them was using ended in murder on Tuesday.


Dead is 32-year-old Sherwayne Underwood of La Parfaite Harmonie, WBD. The incident occurred at about 03:00h this morning.


Underwood was allegedly murdered by a 29-year-old man at Policeman Corner, La Parfaite Harmonie.


The suspect was subsequently apprehended by police ranks and has since admitted to fatally stabbing the 32-year-old man during a fight.

The Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) Corporate Communications Unit (CCU) reported that the men were at Policeman Corner imbibing when a misunderstanding ensued after the 29-year-old suspect told Underwood he was using “bush weed.”


As a result, the suspect dealt the now-deceased man a punch to the side of his head, and a fight ensued.


During the fight, the suspect whipped a knife and dealt 32-year-old Underwood a single stab to his abdomen.


After being stabbed, Underwood ran a short distance away before he collapsed. He was picked up in a conscious condition by public-spirited persons and rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injury.


The suspect who made good his escape from the scene was later arrested at about 06:20 h this morning.


The suspect was arrested and escorted to Parfaite Harmonie Police Station, where he gave a video-recorded statement under caution, admitting to the crime.


The man's body is at the Ezekiel Funeral Home, awaiting a Post Mortem Examination (PME) as the investigations are ongoing.
