Family cries for justice as fisherman fatally shot by Police laid to rest
Almost one week after Police fatally shot him, 20-year-old fisherman Kishan Budburgh was on Saturday laid to rest, and his family is adamant that they “need justice.”
Budburgh of Grove Huntley, Mahaicony, East Coast Demerara (ECD) and 31-year-old Detective Corporal Dwayne McPherson were shot on New Year’s Day by ranks who were responding to a report of a stabbing at Mahaicony.
Following the incident, the Guyana Police Force (GPF) promised a “comprehensive investigation” with “timely updates” to the press.
But no information has been forthcoming. In fact, the last update provided by the Police was the findings of the Post Mortem Examination (PME) conducted on the men.
The PME stated that the duo died from shock and haemorrhage due to gunshot injuries. Notwithstanding, Budburgh’s distraught mother, Beverly Dundas, said her son did not deserve to die in the manner in which he did.
“I ask for justice. I want justice for my son because I don’t believe that is the way my son must die,” she posited at her son’s funeral.
The grieving mother added, “He is not an animal; he is not a beast. He is a human bean like each and every one of us, and I really need justice for my son, and I want the government must give us justice.”
Moreover, Dundas noted that it has been hard on her family since her son's death. Besides, her husband appeared to still be wrapping his head around the tragic incident.
“Right now, I am hurt; I cannot even eat my food, I cannot drink water properly, so I really need justice. If now I [take] in sick now, who going be the cause of it? Is the police officers caused it. They have no right to shoot my son.”
The distressed mother contended that if the Police wanted to arrest her son, they should have done it in a “peaceful manner.”
Though the Police have not released any information regarding what transpired, MTV News Update understands that McPherson and two other ranks from Mahaicony Police Station were dispatched to the location following a stabbing report involving Budburgh, his brothers, and another man.
A scuffle reportedly ensued in their quest to arrest Budburgh, during which the fisherman was shot three times. McPherson was subsequently shot twice, according to the PME. Two Police ranks are under close arrest.
