Engineer stabbed to death after trying to defend friend


After attempting to defend his friend, an engineer was killed today in the vicinity of Zahora Street, Better Hope, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

Dead is Neil Rampersaud, 31, of Better Hope, ECD. The incident occurred at about 07:38h.

A statement from the Guyana Police Force (GPF) said that at around 6:35h, the suspect, who is a 40-year-old male of Victoria Road, Plaisance, ECD, wounded another man by the name of Mohan Panchu.


As a result, Rampersaud, who lives nearby to where the incident occurred, approached the suspect and informed him that he had to go to the police station for wounding Panchu.


This led to a misunderstanding between the two, and Rampersaud dealt the suspect two lashes about his body. The suspect, who was armed with a 'coconut blade,' stabbed him in the upper left-side rib area.


The 31-year-old Engineer was escorted to the Woodlands Hospital, where he succumbed while receiving medical treatment.


The man's body was escorted to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, awaiting a Post Mortem Examination (PME).


The suspect was arrested and is presently in custody at the Sparendaam Police Station. Police also have the 'coconut blade' used to commit the crime in their possession. Investigations are ongoing.
