A 34-year-old Venezuelan national was killed late Saturday night after the electric cycle he was riding was struck by a motor car along the Enmore Public Road, East Coast Demerara (ECD).
Dead is Carlos Eliber, a construction worker of Mon Repos. According to reports, the accident occurred at about 23:50 hrs and involved motor car PAN 5007, driven by a 25-year-old man of Blossom Scheme, Enmore, and the electric cycle ridden by Eliber.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) reported that the motor car was proceeding west along the southern driving lane of the Enmore Public Road when Eliber reportedly rode across the roadway from north to south and into the path of the vehicle.
Police said the driver claimed he swerved south and applied the brakes to avoid a collision. However, the right-side front portion of the motor car collided with the electric cycle.
The impact flung Eliber into the air before he landed on the roadway, sustaining multiple injuries to his body.
Emergency Medical Technicians were summoned to the scene, and Eliber was later examined by a doctor attached to the Georgetown Public Hospital, who pronounced him dead.
His body was subsequently taken to the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Police said a breathalyser test conducted on the driver recorded 35 and 39 micrograms of alcohol in his breath. The driver remains in police custody as the investigation continues.
