Driver surrenders hours after fatal Versailles accident

Dead: Regan Martin

The driver involved in the accident that claimed the life of 27-year-old motorcyclist Regan Martin early Sunday morning has surrendered to the police hours after reportedly fleeing the scene.

Accompanied by his attorney, the driver turned himself into law enforcement authorities later in the day.

The accident occurred around 02:30h on the Versailles Public Road, West Bank Demerara (WBD), near the Health Centre.

According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), Martin, a resident of Lot 532 First Avenue, Parfaite Harmonie, was riding his motorcycle CL 4994 north along the western side of the road when he was struck by a speeding motor car bearing registration number PTT 2444.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the car, travelling south at an alleged high rate of speed, lost control and collided head-on with Martin.

The impact flung the motorcyclist onto the grass parapet, where he succumbed to his injuries.

The car continued off the road, ploughing through bushes before ending up partially submerged in a trench.

After the crash, the driver reportedly exited the vehicle and fled the scene. His whereabouts were unknown for several hours before he presented himself to police with legal representation.
