A 55-year-old man lost his life on Saturday night following a three-vehicle crash along the Greenwich Park Public Road, East Bank Essequibo (EBE).
Dead is Deryck Singh of St Lawrence, who was driving motor car PXX 9053 at the time of the accident.
According to the Guyana Police Force (GPF), the fatal crash occurred at about 21:10 hrs and involved Singh’s car along with motor lorry GAB 5416, driven by a 31-year-old man of Leonora, West Coast Demerara (WCD), and motor lorry GAF 6756, driven by a 21-year-old man of Cornelia Ida.
Initial investigations revealed that the two lorries were proceeding east along the northern side of the Greenwich Park Public Road when Singh’s vehicle, which was travelling west in the centre of the roadway between the northern and southern lanes, allegedly swerved north into the path of motor lorry GAB 5416.
Police said the car then collided with the right-side rear wheel of the lorry, causing the vehicle to lose control and end up on the southern lane facing west.
In the aftermath of that collision, motor lorry GAF 6756, which was also travelling east along the northern side of the road, reportedly swerved onto the southern lane in an effort to avoid the crash. However, the lorry then collided head-on with Singh’s car.
As a result of the impact, Singh was pinned inside his vehicle and sustained injuries to his body. Public-spirited citizens removed him from the wreckage in an unconscious condition and rushed him to the De Kinderen Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.
His body has since been taken to the Ezekiel Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Police said a breathalyser test conducted on the driver of motor lorry GAB 5416 recorded 071 and 072 micrograms of alcohol in his breath, while the driver of motor lorry GAF 6756 recorded 05 micrograms.
Both lorry drivers are in police custody assisting with investigations, while the vehicles involved have been lodged pending examination. Investigations are ongoing.
