Driver in Blankenburg hit-and-run accident pleads not guilty to causing pedestrian’s death

L-R: Vickey Balgobin and Azaad Khan

28-year-old Vickey Balgobin was on Thursday remanded to prison after being slapped with three charges, including causing death by dangerous driving.

The first charge against Balgobin states that on September 3, 2022, at Blankenburg Public Road, WCD, he drove motor car PTT 952 in a manner dangerous to the public, thereby causing the death of Azaad Khan.

Balgobin was also charged for failing to render assistance to an injured person and failing to stop after an accident.

The 28-year-old man, who hails from Area ‘G’ De Willem, West Coast Demerara (WCD), pleaded not guilty to the causing death charge and was remanded to prison.

He, however, pleaded guilty to the remaining charges and was fined $40,000 or 12 weeks imprisonment for each. The matter was adjourned to October 26, 2022.

Reports are that Balgobin was reportedly driving a black Allion motor car at a fast rate of speed along the Blankenburg Public Road when he collided with Khan, who was walking across the roadway.

As a result of the collision, the pedestrian fell on the southern side of the road, and his left leg “broke off” and landed in a yard four houses away.

Khan’s motionless body was picked up by members of the Community Policing Group (CPG) and the Police and taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Balgobin drove away from the scene but was later arrested. He had told Police he left the scene because he ‘panicked.’
