Corentyne men remanded on drug charge
30-year-old Suraj Singh of No. 72 Village and 55-year-old Mourice Vanslutman of No. 70 Village on the Corentyne were both remanded when they appeared in the No. 51 Magistrates Court to answer a possession of drugs charge on Friday.
The duo pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to them by Magistrate Alex Moore.
The allegation is that on September 27, 2022, the two accused had in their possession 277.7 pounds of marijuana in their possession for the purpose of trafficking.
According to the facts of the case, on the day in question, CANU Officers intercepted two adults and one minor who was seen inside a speed boat in the Manarabisi Canal, East Berbice Corentyne.
A search was conducted on the vessel in the presence of the occupants, which led to the discovery of several parcels of suspected narcotics and one shotgun with 16 live cartridges.
The men were told of the offence committed and escorted to CANU headquarters where they were charged and processed for court.
Attorney at Law Bernard DaSilva represented the two accused who are expected to make their next court appearance on October 21, 2022.
The two accused are also expected to be charged with the possession of an illegal gun and ammunition.
