After more than a year after escaping from the Mazaruni Prison, convicted killer, 27-year-old Samuel Gouveia, was recaptured by Police in Region Eight on Tuesday after attempting to seek medical attention.

Commander for Region Eight, Senior Superintendent Michael Kingston, has confirmed that ranks in his division have recaptured the escapee at the Mahdia District Hospital, where he was attempting to seek medical attention for a wound to his neck.

On Monday, around 23:30h, Gouveia was reportedly wounded at Mowasie landing, Konawaruk.

It is alleged that Gouveia had a heated argument with an identifiable male over money and the man stabbed him to his left-side neck, resulting in the knife being stuck there.

The prison escapee was transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he is presently under police guard.

The Guyana Police Force (GPF) has noted that Gouveia was positively identified by a Prison Officer and by records and tattoos on his left hand.

On February 15, 2021, Gouveia and three other inmates escaped from the Mazaruni Prison in Region Seven.

The three other escapees are convicted murderers Imran Ramsaywack and Kenrick Lyte along with convicted killer Ryan Jones.

The 27-year-old was serving 18 years and nine months behind bars for manslaughter at the time of his escape.

Ramsaywack and Jones were last year shot and killed following a reported shootout with police at Better Hope South, East Coast Demerara (ECD), while Lyte is still on the run.
