Connection of power ship to DBIS to commence on Sunday

Arrival of the power ship at Everton in Region Six

The connection of the 36-megawatt power ship to the Demerara Berbice Interconnected System (DBIS) is set to commence on Sunday.

The ship, which arrived in Guyana on Wednesday, journeyed to Everton in Region Six, where it would be anchored.

The Zone Manager of Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL), Ravindra Jagnandan, said the preparatory work is almost complete. He explained that the constant change in the weather had posed some challenges to the team working to accommodate the ship.

“Also, what we are doing is ensuring there is enough lighting in the parameters of the compound so we can ensure proper security of the vessel and the crew,” Jagnandan stated.

He added that the ship is expected to become fully operationalised by May 8, 2024.

The government, through GPL, had signed a multi-million-dollar contract with Urbacon Concessions Investments, W.L.L (UCI), a subsidiary of UCC Holdings in Qatar, in collaboration with Karpowership International to rent the ship for two years.

The decision came as GPL - Guyana’s main electricity generating company - was grappling with a power shortfall.

The electricity generating company has already paid a mobilisation fee of US$1 million to rent the power ship and will pay 6.62 US cents per kWh as a monthly charter fee. Based on the electricity generated, it will also pay 0.98 cents per kilowatt hour on maintenance.
