Arson suspected as fire destroys house at Linden

A fire at Lot 63 Ariwa Oval, Retrieve, MacKenzie, Linden on Saturday night has left a pensioner homeless.

Reports are that at about 22:36h, the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) was alerted of a fire at the address and immediately deployed a water bowser and four firefighters.

On arrival, firefighters found a two-storey concrete structure with corrugated metal sheeting engulfed in flames.

According to the Fire Service, the structure occupied by 77-year-old Douglas Joseph sustained irreparable damage, resulting in the complete destruction of the building and its contents. The fire was allegedly started by unknown persons.

The GFS said, “The incident remains under investigation as Fire Prevention officials collaborate with the Police to determine the cause of the fire.”
