Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Anil Nandlall has dismissed claims made by some sections of society that the construction of the International Airport and the Stadium in Berbice will be a “white elephant.”
He said that despite the criticisms, the government will pursue its developmental agenda and, in the same breath, noted that the airport and stadium will be an economic breakthrough for the county.
“We will invest, we will take the risk, we will do that, and we have no regrets into the pursuits plans and objectives, and we are not going to take these criticisms seriously. We will proceed,” the AG asserted.
Minister Nandlall referred to the National Stadium built in Providence, East Bank Demerara (EBD), which was once described as a “white elephant.” But today, the National Stadium is being used as a venue for hosting local and international events.
“If we put these facilities in Berbice, we believe that these facilities by themselves will create the economic opportunities, will create the job opportunities, the developmental platforms that are required for economic take-off.”
Last week, President Irfaan Ali announced that an Ogle-type airport would be built at Rose Hall and a Sports Stadium would be built at Palmyra, Corentyne.
