A 59-year-old woman and a Perseverance, Essequibo man, were arrested on Wednesday after being busted with cocaine and finches at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA).
In a statement, the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) said that Officers at the CJIA intercepted an outgoing female passenger destined for the United States of America (USA) with a large quantity of suspected cocaine concealed in biscuit wrappers in her carry-on luggage.
Unique Sunshine London, Lot 54 Haslington, East Coast Demerara (ECD), was arrested and escorted to CANU’s Headquarters with the suspected cocaine.
The narcotics tested positive for cocaine and amounted to 11.188 kilograms with a street value of $12.3 million and US$336,000 if landed in the USA.
According to CANU, while investigating London, a male passenger attempted to smuggle six finches concealed in hair rollers.
Dhanraj Deochand, of Perseverance, Essequibo, was arrested after it was discovered that he checked in luggage for Sunshine. Investigations are in progress.
“CANU wishes to remind the public that the trafficking of narcotics is illegal and care should be taken in examining packages when asked by others to transport them,” the statement concluded.
