Health Minister Dr Frank Anthony has confirmed the presence of the omicron variant in Guyana.
During Wednesday’s COVID 19 update the Health Minister revealed that "of the 20 samples that we sent 19 came back positive for omicron."
He explained, "one was indeterminate because the sample in self apparently they did not have enough genetic material in the sample to be able to sequence it."
The Health Ministry in February last had sent 20 samples from COVID 19 patients to the Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) to test for the Omicron variant after there was an increase in COVID 19 cases.
Currently, there are 434 active cases countrywide with 33 of these patients hospitalised.
