A man who told the court that he stole several items from an apartment because the door was open, and he was drunk, was today remanded to prison.

30-year-old Christopher Gonsalves, of Independence Boulevard, Albouystown, was arraigned before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and pleaded guilty to the charge.

He admitted that on January 21, at Camp Street, Werk-en-Rust, he broke into the apartment of Otas Iobahan, and stole several items spanning from laptops, chargers, cell phones, personal documents, flash drives, and haversacks, property of Iobahan and Shanette Daly.

Reports are that Gonsalves entered the apartment after the owner had closed it and removed the items.

Police said that the man was awoken by his girlfriend at about 3 am and informed that someone had broken into the place. Upon making checks they discovered that the items were missing.

The matter was reported, and Gonsalves was later arrested following information that the police received.

The accused was remanded to prison until February 28, following a probation report.
