Juvenile among four arrested after Police nets 3000 pounds of marijuana


A juvenile and three adults are in Police custody after a narcotics eradication exercise at DeVeldt settlement in the Berbice riverain area on Saturday unearthed 3000 pounds of marijuana.


The Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) Corporate Communications Unit (CCU) reported that the exercise was carried out between 05:30h to 20:00h and 15,000 cannabis plants ranging from ten inches to seven feet amounting to approximately 2000 pounds were found cultivated on six acres of land.

In addition, approximately 1,000 pounds of dried cannabis and six 12-gauge cartridges were found in a camp, where three adult males and one juvenile were seen attending to the plants on the farms.

Upon seeing the Police, they all ran in an attempt to escape but were apprehended. The three adults were interviewed and identified as Fabian Atkinson, 30, of Santa Rosa Mission, North West District; Terrence John, 24, of New Amsterdam, Berbice; and Elboy Anastacio, 20, of Grove, East Bank Demerara (EBD).


A search was conducted on John’s bag in a makeshift camp, and an A03 Samsung cellular phone and one ID card were found.


Further searches were conducted in the camp, and a Guyana Passport belonging to Ephraim Daniel Vaughn and his vaccination card were found.The camps, drying areas, processed cannabis, and cannabis plants were all destroyed by fire.


The three adult males and the juvenile were escorted to the Central Police Station along with the cartridges, spray can, water can, brush cutter, and cannabis plants.


At the station, the detainees were placed in custody, pending charges as the investigations continue.
