$362.4M Contract for .65meggawatt farm in Madhia to be signed shortly

- 2,900 persons to benefit - GEA CEO

2,900 residents of Madhia will soon benefit from solar energy as the $362.411; 200 million contract will be signed shortly, as Government works towards achieving an energy mix in Guyana.

This is according to Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) Dr. Mahendra Sharma, in an invited comment.

Chief Executive Officer of the Guyana Energy Agency, Dr. Mahendra Sharma.

Dr. Sharma said, “We have received cabinet’s no objection for that contract and it’s for a .65megawatt solar farm at Madhia, with battery energy storage and it is going to be one of the first grid forming systems of that size that’s going to be installed.”

According to the CEO, this means that the solar farm can function by itself, without the need to run a diesel generator for extended periods.

“Obviously, for extended periods during the nights, you will have to have some diesel support because the sun only shines for five or six hours in the day and then we have to capture the energy throughout the day and store it.”

With the installation, 2,900 persons will be benefiting.

“Whoever is served by the Madhia Community, whoever is served by the existing Madhia mini grid, those will be the beneficiaries,” Dr. Sharma stated.
